Successful 4th International Recycling Forum in Wiesbaden: Collaboration for the Circular Economy

The 4th International Recycling Forum, held on December 10 and 11, 2024, in Wiesbaden, showcased how collaboration and innovation can drive sustainable progress in the circular economy for plastics. Organized by RIGK in cooperation with EPRO, the event brought together over 130 participants from more than 15 countries to work on the future of plastics recycling. The forum was once again a great success, featuring distinguished speakers and engaging presentations in a well-attended conference hall, as well as a dynamic exhibition area at the Dorint Hotel, where leading industry players presented their innovations.

Innovative approaches and regulatory directions

The opening session, moderated by Jan Bauer (Managing Director, RIGK) and Mike Jefferson (Managing Director, EPRO), highlighted the challenges of the circular economy, particularly the new regulatory requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). It became clear that the industry faces significant challenges, but also that practical solutions can be created through increased collaboration and technological innovations. Industry experts such as Gian De Belder from Procter & Gamble, Ton Emans from Plastics Recyclers Europe, or Vicente Olmos from SINTAC, Plastics Recycling Industry Ambassador 2024, shared their perspectives on the plastic circular economy and current market trends.

A panel discussion on the PPWR addressed the impacts of the new regulation. The discussion emphasized investments in recycling infrastructure, cooperation strategies for sustainability and competitiveness, and innovation as key to implementing the plastics circular economy.

EPR, innovative recycling technologies, and agricultural plastics recycling

Another central topic was Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for commercial and industrial packaging. Innovative systems were presented in which manufacturers are organized to collect packaging in various countries, thereby contributing to increasing recycling rates.

Technological advances in recycling were also in focus. Exhibitors such as the Erema Group and Herbold Meckenheim presented new technologies for optimizing plastic recycling. Particularly interesting were presentations on the role of AI in recycling, such as the KISS project, which uses AI-based material flow optimization.

Additionally, the complementary possibilities of chemical and mechanical recycling were intensively discussed. Experts from BASF, GreenDot Group, and Aquafil showed how these technologies can contribute to the circular economy.

Another highlight was the focus on agricultural plastic recycling. Industry professionals explored global approaches and innovations driving the recycling of used plastics in agriculture, particularly through closed-loop recycling and sustainable product designs.

Networking and exchange in a stylish setting

The evening event at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden provided the perfect setting for further exchange among participants. In a christmas atmosphere, ideas were deepened, and new perspectives were developed, further promoting dialogue on the challenges of the circular economy.

Successful forum with clear impulses for the future

The 4th International Recycling Forum was a great success and set important impulses for the conservation of plastics and packaging materials. With an international participant base and innovative exhibitors, the event once again became a significant meeting point for the industry. The contributions of leading experts clearly showed that collaboration, new technologies, and innovative business models are key to overcoming the challenges of the circular economy.

Jan Bauer summed it up:

"The circular economy only works if all stakeholders pull together – from producers to recyclers. Events like these offer the perfect opportunity to learn from each other and develop new ideas together."
